    The best bait is live or very fresh small herring. Live herring can be caught with a small bait rig and works excellently as bait. If the herring is too large, you can cut off its head so that the mackerel can take the bait more easily.

Frozen small herring (stagg)

    Frozen small herring, often called "stagg," is a practical and economical option. A box cost approximately 25 SEK in 2019 and about 50 SEK in 2025. If you fish for shorter periods, you can divide the contents into portion bags or glass jars. Thaw in the refrigerator's cold section for 4–5 hours, portion, and refreeze immediately. One box often lasts for 5–8 occasions.

    You can also buy fresh herring pieces. To maintain quality, divide them into portion bags and freeze. Only take one portion at a time and let it be just thawed when you arrive at the fishing spot. This provides fresh bait, better catch results, and saves money.
