Mackerel Fishing: How to fish for mackerel?
Share
You can fish for mackerel with a float set or a lure.
Fishing for mackerel with a float set is easier if you're just starting out. You need bait on the hook for mackerel to eat. When you see the float go underwater, you lift the rod and hook the fish. The best bait for mackerel fishing is small herring or pieces of herring.
For best results when float fishing, use a sturdy mackerel hook with a bait holder so that the herring strip stays on.

Why use a 10g float? When I first arrived in Sweden, I bought a famous brand mackerel float set from a large fishing tackle shop. It had a 40g float. When I fished for mackerel with it, all the other fishermen caught fish, but I didn't. I tried several times and discovered the reason. A 40g sinker was too much for the baitfish; the baitfish sank when it went down, especially when the float's depth was more than 5 meters, so I removed a 30g sinker and kept only the 10g sinker on it. With a 40g float but only a 10g sinker, the float always looked flat, not straight. Other fishermen laughed at me and reminded me that my hook was on the bottom, I needed to adjust the float's depth, I just replied "no no no, wait wait". Then I caught my first mackerel.

To fish for mackerel with a lure, you need to cast the lure into the water and lift the rod up and down, or cast out and then reel back in. When you feel the fish bite the lure, lift the rod and hook the fish.

Once you have hooked the fish, you must keep the rod up until you land the fish.
If you want to quickly change leaders or lures without re-tying the line, we recommend attaching a durable swivel snap directly to the mainline.
